The Institute for Environmental Solutions (IES), a partner with Wheat Ridge Parks & Recreation, has planted around 1,000 trees and plants in the Wheat Ridge Greenbelt since 2012. Plants include chokecherries, sumacs, wax currants, cottonwoods, wild roses, native grasses, and wildflower seeds. These trees and plants can be found along the Clear Creek Trail from Youngfield Street to Kipling Street.
Tree Stewards make all the difference in keeping our open spaces beautiful! They help care for these trees and plants by watering, weeding and mulching once or twice a week from April through October.
Here’s what Art Hertel, a dedicated Tree Steward has to say:
"My family and I have lived in Wheat Ridge since 2008 and enjoy the small community atmosphere Wheat Ridge offers. I have been a Tree Steward volunteer with IES for many years, caring for trees and shrubs planted in the Wheat Ridge Greenbelt. Most of the trees and shrubs that fellow volunteers and I care for are well established and are an asset to the area. It is a very rewarding volunteer experience being a Tree Steward as you get to see the plantings develop and mature. I also enjoy being among others who are interested in the environment. I encourage anyone interested in becoming a Tree Steward to seek out information on the program.”
Thank you, Art for your commitment to caring for our natural resources!
IES welcomes volunteers of all ages and abilities. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a Tree Steward in our wonderful Greenbelt, email solutions@i4es.org or call 720-295-4437.
