[ARCHIVED] COVID-19 UPDATE

Coronavirus

Your Parks & Recreation team has been working hard behind the scenes, determining the best way to serve the Wheat Ridge community during this time of uncertainty. The following information was updated on 5/13/20.

Facilities
We do not have an opening date for public use of our recreation facilities at this time, but will continue to evaluate and communicate as we have more information.

This includes:

  • Wheat Ridge Recreation Center
  • Active Adult Center
  • Anderson Building
  • Historic Park buildings

Anderson Pool will not open Memorial Day weekend as originally planned. A decision about whether or not the pool will open later in the summer for a partial season will be made late May/early June - stay tuned.

Rentals
All facility, park and field rentals are cancelled through June. Stay tuned to find out if rentals will become available again later this summer.

Summer Guide
We did not produce a summer guide this year due to the inability to offer many of our summer programs. Get timely updates on all things Parks & Rec by signing up for our emails at www.rootedinfun.com/getmyguide

Summer Camp
We have prioritized childcare as a community need that we can serve and and are pleased to be able to offer summer camp beginning June 1st under strict new guidelines. Staff are working closely with state licensing to implement new policies and protocols to maintain the safest environment possible for children enrolled. Sun Camp will be housed at the Wheat Ridge Recreation Center, which remains closed to public use and all other programs at this time. Camp is now full, and we are only accepting waitlist registrations at this time.

Summer Preschool
Due to insufficient registration, preschool for summer 2020 has been cancelled. Information about preschool for the 2020-21 school year will be coming soon. www.rootedinfun.com/preschool

Virtual Rec Center
Check out our Virtual Rec Center page at www.rootedinfun.com/virtualrec for free resources, activities, pre-recorded classes, and upcoming live streaming classes. Content will be updated daily, so check back often to see what’s new!

At Home Virtual Personal Training
Information coming soon!

Donations
Due to the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, Parks & Recreation like many other businesses and organizations is experiencing a dramatic loss of revenue. Members of the community have inquired about how they can continue to support Parks & Recreation programs and services during this time, so the Wheat Ridge Community Foundation has setup a donation account for this purpose. Donations may be made at https://bit.ly/donate2WRparksrec

Parks, Trails & Open Spaces
Our parks and trails remain open with the following restrictions:

  • Playgrounds and picnic shelters/pavilions remain closed
  • Tennis courts have reopened for single play only (max. 2 people per court)
  • Basketball courts have reopened for groups of 4 or less
  • Discovery Skate Park has reopened
  • Clear Creek is closed to all water activities including gold panning.
  • The dog park at Fruitdale Park remains open. Our parks team is frequently disinfecting the gates and other surfaces at the park to help keep everyone healthy and safe. Please take necessary precautions and act responsibly when visiting the dog park.
  • When visiting parks, always practice social distancing. It’s recommended to not touch surfaces on which the virus can live and if you do, please use proper handwashing techniques or use hand sanitizer. Even though you are outside, please keep the community safe by following the same guidelines as other public spaces:
    • If you are sick, do not visit parks and public areas
    • Practice social distancing, even in parks and on trails
    • We expect all park visitors to adhere to public health guidelines and NOT gather in groups until further notice
    • Bring your own hand washing supplies and/or hand sanitizer
    • Bring your own drinking water
    • High-risk individuals should use discretion and/or follow the recommendations of your health care provider for visiting parks and outdoor spaces

Essential staff continue working at our parks and facilities to maintain these spaces. Staff are complying with public health guidelines regarding staff reductions and alternating shifts, and are practicing social distancing and hygiene protocols while working. In addition to keeping yourselves and the community safe, please also consider staff who are maintaining our parks, trails and open spaces so that you and your family can continue to get outside and enjoy these places. In addition to following the above guidelines, please also:

  • Leave no trace, pack out what you bring in
  • Utilize trash receptacles
  • Always keep your dog on leash
  • Pick up your dog’s waste and dispose of it in a trash receptacle

As always, thank you for your patience and understanding during this time.

We look forward to the day when we can resume normal operations and see you all again. Until then, stay well!
